AACPS Community Comes Together to Discuss Opioid Crisis in Secret No More Book Clubs
From all appearances, Lisa Hillman’s life was rich and fulfilling, but when she discovers that her son has been using drugs, she is forced to confront everything she thought she knew about addiction. In her first-person account, Secret No More, local-parent Lisa Hillman shares her story of discovery, shame, denial, and finally acceptance and reminds us that addiction is not bound by race, socio-economics, or geography.

This month, over 80 AACPS educators, parents, and community members will come together to read and discuss Secret No More in face-to-face, online, and twitter book clubs. Together, participants will raise awareness about the opioid crisis and promote local resources to help students and families struggling with addiction right here in Anne Arundel County.

Book club participants will also be invited to an exclusive event to meet author Lisa Hillman and her son, Jacob, for a Q&A and panel discussion about the opioid crisis. For more information about Secret No More and the AACPS book clubs, go to www.aacps.org/bookclub.

Business Partner Spotlight:
Anne Arundel County Public Library
Anne Arundel County Public Library: Educate, Enrich, Inspire

Anne Arundel County Public Libraries (AACPL) has been one of the school system’s closest partners for decades. With a wide range of informative and engaging programs to support children, parents, and community members, AACPL works to educate, enrich, and inspire the communities we serve. From early literacy programs, such as 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, to ongoing STEM programs, including the annual STEM festival, AACPL is continually developing creative ways to engage our students.

One of the most exciting recent partnerships between AACPL and AACPS is the Student Access to Improved Learning (SAIL) card program, which automatically provides every AACPS student with a public library account. Students can use their SAIL account to access hundreds of online resources, such as Rosetta Stone and BrainFuse, and to check out books, magazines, and DVDs without fines. In addition, the Educator’s Library cards allows AACPS teachers and media specialists check out up to 99 items for use in the classroom. With every new initiative, AACPL sets itself apart as a true community partner for AACPS.
